Our scenic tour for alpine lovers

June to late September

We meet at 9:00 a.m. at the Südtirol Rad bike rental opposite the main bus station in Merano, near the Freistadion.

The tour starts at 9:30 a.m. After a short briefing about the tour and the e-bikes, we head towards Tirol Castle. Unfortunately, only in the direction of the castle, as it is still not permitted to cycle past it. We take the low-traffic Gnaidweg and make our first stop at the terrace of the water park in Tirolo. This is the perfect place for a refreshing break and offers a beautiful view of the Adige Valley stretching out before us.

Refreshed, we get back on our bikes and look for the best route to the cycling path into the Passeier Valley. Following the Passer river, surrounded by fragrant orchards (well, mainly apple trees), we ride to Saltus where we take the Hirzer cable car. In just a few minutes we ascend over 900 metres to Prenn and enjoy a fantastic panorama: Merano and the Passeier Valley below us, the Texel Group opposite, and lunch ahead of us.

Enjoy the view on the descent

Reach the heights by cable car

We comfortably reach the Oberkirn inn run by the Walzl family. Markus, the in-house chef, invites us to enjoy a traditional mountain meal. No frills—just plenty of homemade, high-quality food. The terrace provides a stunning panoramic view as the perfect accompaniment. Well fortified, we begin the first part of the descent. Riding through mountain meadows (always on asphalt), where haymaking is still partly done by hand, we reach the Boarbichl farm cheese dairy after a few bends. Sieglinde already offers nine varieties of raw milk cheese, ranging from “Rebel” to “Smuggler’s Cheese.” We are happy to be surprised. Cheese settles the stomach, which is perfect, as we need full concentration for the descent into the Masul Gorge. Always on asphalt through the meadows downhill. Those unfamiliar with the mountains may consider the descent steep, but anyone with good e-bike brakes has nothing to worry about. At the level of Verdins, we take a gentle uphill stretch, cycle past the Taser cable car station to St. Georgen, and from there back into the town, where we toast the beautiful day together with an aperitif. During the descent we regularly stop and let our eyes wander across the valley basin. Our guides not only carry repair kits and a first aid kit, but also have plenty to share. Around 4:30 p.m. we return to the starting point.
